Greg Boyd on Mike Huckabee

Once again, a highly trained and degreed professional theologian says it better than me. Suprised? In this case it's Greg Boyd, pastor of Woodland Hills Baptist Church in St. Paul, MN, and professor of theology at Bethel Seminary. I went to his church once, got a ride from a nice guy named Josh, but I never found anyone else who ever went there, so I ended up going to Boyd's "rival" church, Bethlehem Baptist, pastored by John Piper, another well-known author and pastor. The two are almost antithetical in almost every theological issue, except, that little matter of the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Anyway, Greg has written a very nice commentary on our old bud Huckabee's statement that he would change the Constitution to meet "God's standards."

i really enjoyed greg boyd's church the couple of times i went, although the worship service wasn't really my style. i seem to remember a lot of "flag waving," although i may be thinking of a different church. he's very well-read and intelligent and i enjoyed his teaching a lot.

do you remember when he talked to all the guys at ncu about sex and marriage and whatnot, and how our awesome discipleship leaders reacted to his beliefs? it's a bit too long for a forum such as the comments on your blog, so i'll spare the story. but i love that greg boyd says what he feels is right, even though it might mean stepping on toes.

crap, Bryce, I remember the controversy, but I can't for the life of me remember the content of his speech. I seem to remember Jonathan...oh, crap...I forgot his last name, anyway, he was really upset about wasn't he? Did he say homosexuality was ok?

no, he didn't say anything about homosexuality that i remember.

one guy said something about how his wife would have to leave the country for a month or so and he was afraid he would start looking at porn or maybe cheat on his wife. he asked boyd if he thought it would be better just to masturbate to release some pent-up tension so he wouldn't cheat or look at porn.

boyd said that he could not support his opinion scripturally, that it was only his opinion and that he could be wrong. he said he if it were him he would masturbate rather than risk cheating on his wife with porn and/or another woman.

bama and jay were furious. they kept talking about how boyd said that "jacking off is okay" and how they were going to boycott him because he was telling lies and misleading people. because i'm sure they have never done that... no guy in bible college has ever masturbated. i know i certainly never have...

so, anyway, boyd was preaching at chapel the next day. the worship service went as normal, but as soon as boyd was introduced, bama, jay, sherie and a bunch of their dumb-ass lackeys got up from the front-center of the chapel and walked out with their noses turned up. a lot of them were women who were not even at the meeting to hear what he actually said.

this self-righteous bullshit from two guys who stole a twelve-pack of beer from the back of a guy's truck in an applebee's parking lot, dumped them on someone's car they didn't like, put the empty cans under a window, peed on them, then called security to report the cans so they would have to "touch [their] piss."

ahh, bible college.

Oh, so that's what happened. Where was I? I have recenlty come to suspect that there were memories so painful about bible college that I have repressed them. I may need therapy.
